Freight traffic on the Strasburg Rail Road isn’t new, but for the past several years the railroad has stepped up its efforts to court transload business, and improved its facilities to support this source of traffic, including the purchase of an EMD switcher to better handle the traffic.
This summer, though, the railroad has scheduled regular Wednesday and Friday morning freight service – using steam power. The first scheduled train was hauled by 4-8-0 no. 475, finished off in proper fashion with a caboose.
If you have the opportunity, make the early morning trip to Leaman Place to see something rare. (And if you need a cup of coffee on the way, stop by Jennie’s Diner.)
