American Heritage Railways to Operate the C&TS

From the Durango Herald:

An oral agreement was reached Tuesday between Harper and the chairman of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad Commission, which operated the railroad for the states of Colorado and New Mexico, which jointly own the railroad.

The agreement tentatively calls for American Heritage Railways to operate the line for five years, Harper said.

. . .

“We really believe we can do some great things for the Cumbres-Toltec,” he said. “It’s already a great railroad, and we’re just going to open it up to give more people an opportunity to enjoy what it has to offer.”

D&SNGRR no. 473 returns to service

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad has outshopped ex-D&RGW 2-8-2 no. 473 for service. Last operated in late 2006 wearing “Bumblebee” paint applied for the 2006 RailFest, no. 473 received a boiler overhaul and a black paint job.

The annual RailFest will be August 21-24, 2008. Expect an appearance by the 2-8-0 no. 315, and perhaps even Dan Markoff‘s ex-Eureka & Palisade 4-4-0 no. 4, “Eureka.” “Eureka” is again certified for service outside Nevada thanks to an FRA waiver granted on its boiler inspection.
